【Immersive Interactive Dining Table】 Savoring Hakka Flavors | 2017 Hakka Industry Expo - Virtual-Physical Serving Show
Project Design Concept: How do you let guests experience the essence of Hakka food culture while waiting to be served? At the 2017 Hakka Industry Expo, we used Kinect motion-sensing detection and high-lumen projection technology to transform an ordinary round dining table into a large dynamic display. Using the process of turning mustard greens into preserved "fu cai" as our narrative, guests participated in farming through physical interaction and then triggered a physical mechanism to reveal the finished dish — creating a surprise feast that blended visual and culinary experience.
Interactive Experience Flow:
- The Table as a Screen: A projector mounted overhead cast imagery downward, turning the entire round tabletop into a lush mustard green field with rich, eye-catching visuals.
- Motion-Sensing Harvest Experience:
- Field Harvesting: The system detected participants' hand movements. When both hands were swept upward, the mustard greens on screen were "pulled" from the ground, letting guests enjoy the feel of harvesting by hand.
- Traditional Preparation: Follow-up interactive visuals depicted the process of pickling and fermenting the mustard greens into "fu cai", conveying the Hakka spirit of cherishing what one has.
- Mechanical Surprise Serving: Once the virtual fu cai was complete, a mechanical mechanism at the centre of the table opened automatically, and real, steaming Hakka traditional dishes rose slowly into view — achieving a seamless transition from "virtual origin" to physical table.
