【Place-based IP Adaptation】 Jump! Southern Mario | 2026 Pingtung Pavilion - Motion-Sensing Challenge Interactive Adventure

Project Design Concept:

To help younger generations connect with Pingtung's tourism and local culture in a more intuitive way, we created a "Southern Mario" game that combines classic game mechanics with motion-sensing interaction. The IP for this project was developed through a collaboration between the Pingtung County Government and a Red Dot Award-winning team from Germany. Hengchun's iconic onions, dragon fruit, ancient brick kilns, and Pangola grass were translated into four charming little monsters that embody the spirit of the south.

Participants face challenges from the southern monsters across dynamically scrolling digital side-scrolling scenes. By jumping and dodging with their whole body, players enjoy the thrill of classic gameplay while naturally learning about local culture along the way — deepening their connection to Pingtung's energy through entertainment.

Interactive Experience Flow:

  • Character Immersion: Visitors step into the stage area where sensors detect their movement. Throughout the game, they face challenges from Pingtung's local culture monsters.
  • Full-Body Motion Control: As the retro game screen scrolls, participants must physically move and jump with both feet to precisely control their on-screen character — dodging obstacles and collecting coins.
  • Local Element Collection: During the adventure, players jump to collect coins and accumulate points. Final scores are tallied at the end. The experience draws crowds and creates a lively atmosphere, leaving a lasting impression of Pingtung's tourism identity.
